Roanoke Sierra Club to General Assembly: "Just say 'NO' to smoking in public places"

December 12, 2007 - The Roanoke Group of the Sierra Club has confirmed its support for legislation to prohibit smoking in all public places and places of employment in Virginia.

Similar legislation sponsored by Sen. Brandon Bell of Roanoke was passed by the Virginia Senate last year but failed in the House of Delegates.  A campaign to enact this legislation in 2008 has been initiated by Virginians for a Healthy Future Coalition http://www.healthyva.org/), which is led by American Heart Association, American Lung Association, and American Cancer Society.

Our support of this initiative has been communicated to Governor Kaine, all Delegates and Senators who represent members of the Roanoke Group, and the news media.

We urge all of our members to support this measure by contacting their state legislators.  Those wishing to actively work on this campaign are invited to visit the Virginians for a Healthy Future Coalition web site (http://www.healthyva.org/ ) to find out how you can get involved.
