General Information on our Forest Protection policies

With George Washington and Jefferson National Forests located within our region, the Roanoke River Group is critically interested in the issues of protecting these ecological and scenic treasures.  The Sierra Club opposes all commercial logging on public National Forest land.  A mere 4% of timber resources come from the National Forests, yet the harvest of this timber is detrimental to the natural ecosystems of the forest, and it is a net cost to US taxpayers!  We believe the National Forests better serve the public interest by being used as recreational lands, wilderness, wildlife habitat, and for watershed protection.
