OVERVIEW:
To curb Global Warming,
eliminate air pollution and promote energy independence, we need a
new direction in energy policy!
At this "Town Meeting", one
of several around Virginia, the Sierra Club's Virginia Chapter will
present the CITIZENS ENERGY PLAN FOR VIRGINIA, a comprehensive
road map for a clean, sustainable energy future.
SPEAKERS:
Michael
Town, Richmond, has worked in the environmental movement
since 1995 and has been Director of the Sierra Club's
Virginia Chapter since 2003. With over 17,000 members, the Virginia Chapter
of the Sierra Club is the largest grass-roots environmental
organization in the Commonwealth. Mr. Town is responsible for the
operation of the Chapter's Richmond office and also for
the Club's extensive legislative program. He was recently appointed to Governor Kaine's
Energy Policy Advisory
Council.
Eddie
Robtison, Roanoke, is a Staff
Representative for District 8 of the United Steel Workers
(USW), a post he has held for four years. USW, in
collaboration with the Sierra Club has formed the BlueGreen
Alliance. This partnership of labor and the environmental movement focuses on three key issues: Global
Warming and Clean Energy; Fair Trade; and Reducing Toxics, including chemical
security and "green chemistry." Mr. Robtison is a
veteran of 37 years' with USW. He worked for
30 years at Yokohama Tire, where he served as
union president before his retirement.
Billy Weitzenfeld,Floyd, is the Executive Director of the Association of
Energy Conservation Professionals (AECP) and has served in this
capacity for 6 years. AECP is a non-profit energy education and
advocacy organization. Previous to this, Mr. Weitzenfeld was the
Weatherization Director for New River Community Action. Mr.
Weitzenfeld holds a tradesman license as a Master in Heating,
Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC). He serves on the
Board of Directors of the U.S. Green Building Council SW Virginia
Chapter, and is the Executive Director of the Sustainable Living
Education Center.
Al Weed, Nelson
County, is the Chairman of Public
Policy Virginia, which is a non-profit organization focused on
illuminating the connection between progressive values and public
policy through grassroots communication. A graduate of Yale
University in Latin American Studies,
and from Princeton University in international economic development, Mr. Weed
has worked internationally as a civilian for USAID
and private banking. In addition, he served over
42 years in Army Special Forces with service in Viet
Nam and Bosnia. Al is one of the
founders of Virginia's vibrant farm winery industry and has twice
run for the US Congress. He has become a spokesman for the
promise of renewable energy to Virginia's rural economy and advocate for changes
in public policy that will bring about a better energy
