Roanoke Sierra Club's Top Ten Endangered Places

2006

"What's going wrong . . . and what we can and should do about it!"

We have compiled this "Top Ten" list to draw attention to what we believe are the most pressing issues affecting the natural and human environment in our area.

The problem . . . Our solution . . .
#1 - Scenic Ridges and Hillsides of Roanoke County Developments are encroaching on our mountain vistas.  Beneficial forest habitat is being destroyed; natural beauty is being transformed into unattractive urban sprawl. Roanoke County must say "NO" to development on slopes and ridges.  A proper zoning ordinance can save our scenery.  Contact:Annie Krochalis
#2 - Virginia's Explore Park A long term lease with few restrictions raises the specter of destructive development in this publicly owned natural,  recreational, educational and historic resource.  Zoning and land use restrictions must be applied to preserve the natural areas and prevent inappropriate development on this PUBLIC LAND.  Contact:Annie Krochalis
#3 - George Washington & Jefferson National Forests Logging and road building lead to loss of mature and old growth forests, wildlife habitat, biological diversity and places for
backcountry recreation
Protect wildlands, end commercial logging on National Forests, and begin needed work to restore degraded areas of the forest.  More information. Contact: Sherman Bamford
#4 - Roanoke River and Riparian Area A misguided flood control project will do little to reduce flooding but much to destroy  the natural ecology along the river. Restrict development in the flood plain, encourage relocation of buildings in flood prone areas, more vegetation and expanded greenways.  Contact: Bill Modica
#5 - Interstate 81 Corridor If implemented, massive 8-lane I-81 will destroy habitat, create a magnet for even more truck traffic, add to air & noise pollution, and disrupt travel for years. Abandon the STAR solution - it is a flawed boondoggle.  Fix the worst trouble spots on I-81, invest in rail transport, enforce traffic regulations.  Contact: Bob Egbert

#6 - Air Quality Pollution from obsolete coal-fired power plants is believed to cause 1,000 deaths, 28,000 asthma attacks, and thousands of lost work days in Virginia annually.  We support Virginia's "Clean Smokestacks" bill, which will force the dirtiest power plants to use existing technology to clean up their act. #7 - Route 221 Corridor - South Roanoke County Proposed widening of this road and resulting urban sprawl will alter the rural character and increase commuter traffic. Of particular concern is Poages Mill Farm area. Adhere to the Community Plan designating areas as “Rural Village” to limit commercial development; expand “Rural Preserve” zoning.  Contact: Annie Krochalis
#8 - Blue Ridge Parkway scenic vistas Encroaching developments are increasingly visible from the Blue Ridge Parkway, destroying its appeal as the major tourist attraction of our region Local governments should impose restrictions on the amount and nature of development within the viewshed of the Parkway.  Contact: Pam Berberich
#9 - Area streams impaired by soil erosion & runoff Many tributary streams are being significantly impaired by siltation and other pollution from improperly managed developments and other sources. Regulations to encourage Low Impact Development (LID) and stop excessive storm water runoff must be put into effect.  Contact: Bill Modica
#10 -Interstate 73 (proposed) A new Interstate through our region will lead to unacceptable levels of congestion & noise, destruction of historic villages & neighborhoods, and more air pollution. We support the upgrade the existing US 220 South rather than building I-73 over new terrain.  When it comes to highways, more is not better! Contact Bob Egbert
