Bruce Hull: "Searching for Sustainability"

What is sustainability? What does "living sustainably" mean for the world, for the nation, for Southwest Virginia, and for you? For our July Earth Friendly Friday, we are excited to have a return visit from guest lecturer Bruce Hull.

Here's a synopsis of Dr. Hull's presentation in his own words: "In this talk we will explore the myths, misperceptions, hopes and opportunities behind sustainability. We will begin with a discussion about our predicament. How much should we worry about climate change, urbanization, collapsing ocean fisheries, poverty, population growth, finite resources and over-consumption? Then we will explore definitions of sustainability. What future do we want to create? What do we want to sustain? We will discover that there are more definitions than people in the room and that this ambiguity creates opportunities for both using and abusing sustainability planning efforts. The most important question about sustainability, I will argue, revolves around "how." How do we accomplish sustainability? Here we will spend the bulk of the evening, discussing various strategies such as technological innovations, free market solutions, government regulation, and personal willpower. The strategies society pursues to achieve sustainability, I will attempt to illustrate, will greatly determine which future we create. During the presentation we will also address matters of spiritual faith, the role of religious and educational institutions, property rights, equity, risk, hubris, human nature, and the ultimate resource--human innovation."

If this sounds like it will be a provocative discussion, let us assure you that it will be.  Dr. Hull's appearance at our January EFF was one of the most interesting in the history of this program series.  You won't want to miss this!

Bruce Hull is Professor of Social Ecology, College of Natural Resources, at Virginia Tech. He is a social ecologist engaged in research and development programs striving to create thriving and sustainable communities. He advises numerous community groups such as LandCare, the Model Forestry Policy Program, Virginia’s Forest Issues Working Group, and USFS Centers for Urban and Interface Forestry, all of which promote sustainable living and land use. Past projects address a wide range of biocultural problems, from restoration to recreation, but mostly involve efforts to heal the fractured forest.

Date:  July 10, 2009.  Doors open at 6:30, program starts at 7:00 PM.

Location: The Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke, 2015 Grandin Road at Brandon (across from Patrick Henry High School).  It is free and open to the public.  Everyone is encouraged to bring a snack dish for sharing.  For more information contact Bob Egbert at 384-7448 rsegbert@comcast.net.

Earth Friendly Friday is the second Friday of each month, and it is jointly sponsored by the Roanoke Sierra Club and The Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke.
