Bush
Administration's plan to gut the Toxics Release Inventory
Recently [December 7,2005], the Richmond Times-Dispatch published an
article about the Bush
Administration's plan to gut the Toxics Release Inventory.
Problem:
Despite the success of the Toxic Release Inventory, a program that
requires polluters to yearly report the toxic pollution that they pollute,
the EPA wants to keep communities from knowing what pollution is put
into
their air, water, and land. The Environmental Protection Agency is now
threatening to undermine this crucial safeguard, proposing to excuse
companies from disclosing large spills and releases of toxic substances
and require them to report these releases every other year instead of
annually. The EPA must not go forward with this proposed rule.
The Sierra
Club and the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy are
working to stop this giveaway to polluters.
Solution:
The EPA should strengthen the Toxics Release Inventory to protect
communities and workers, not gut the program like they are proposing.
