September 2009 Events for the New River Group of the Sierra Club:

Thursday, September 10
A special preview of the film Coal Country will be shown at 7:50 p.m. at the Lyric Theater in Blacksburg. The film tells the dramatic story of the struggles of Appalachian communities against mountain top removal mining. A concert by Diana Jones, who performs in the movie's soundtrack, will start at 7 p.m. The event is free with a recommended $10 donation to the sponsors, the Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards and the Sierra Club's programs against mountain top removal.

Saturday, September 12
Rocky Knob Hawk Watch, joint outing with the New River Valley Bird Club. Meet at 9AM in front of the Regal theater at the New River Valley Mall. This field trip is timed to catch the peak of the Broadwing migration, but many other migrants are observed during the day. Bring lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen, and a chair or blanket. Call Bruce Grimes for more information, 381-7028.

Wednesday, September 16
3rd Wednesdays at 5. Meet at 5pm at More Than Coffee, a Lebanese restaurant near the corner of North Main and College at 235 North Main in downtown Blacksburg. We will take care of any immediate Sierra Club business, catch up on environmental news, and enjoy the good company. A regular event for the New River Group.

7 pm. General meeting after 5 pm dinner. Nominations will accepted for excom positions to be voted on in November. The Universalist Church, Blacksburg. Turn onto Glade from University Blvd. between Volume II and Kroger. After crossing the bridge over the 460 by-pass, take the second left onto Lark Ln. (beware, at that intersection the street sign on the right reads Shadowlake Rd.), then the first right onto Gladewood. The driveway to the UUC is on the left, about 3/4's of the way to the end of the block. There is a very small sign on the right at the entrance to the driveway. Watch for dip in the driveway for drainage, with a warning sign. Going too fast will produce a good bump.

Sunday, September 20
Party for the Parks. The Sierra Club is organizing "Party for the Parks" house parties to mark the Ken Burns documentary series on the parks to air on PBS in late September.
