Shaw
Gap

The
Shaw Gap area spans from VA 615 east of Feathercamp to VA 600 west
of the Seng Mountain area.
The Iron Mountain Trail, the center of this lofty area, is easily
accessed from the Beartree Campground via the Lum Trail. It is possible
to take a lengthy excursion along the Iron Mountain Trail, with side
trips up and down various trails. Another long-distance option is
a 57-mile Iron Mountain-Appalachian Trail loop.
Features include plentiful wildlife and the remains of an old homestead.
Because the Iron Mountain Trail was once the Appalachian Trail corridor,
it received
a measure of protection not afforded most trails. As a result, older trees now
line many sections of the trail. The area includes about 6 acres of possible
old growth, and the Forest Service characterizes 86 percent of the area as retaining
unspoiled scenic beauty.
