Long Spur

The Long Spur area includes an old segment of the Appalachian Trail, which follows the ridge top and affords scenic views. Another old trail runs along Spur Branch, a native trout stream. Just outside the northeastern boundary, High Rock on Walker Mountain is a unique area for scenic viewing — large rock cliffs overlook the valley below.

The Forest Service characterizes 93 percent of this unroaded area as showing little or no signs of human alteration. An area of 3,550 acres provides opportunities for solitude and back-country recreation. Most of the terrain is steep and rugged.

The box huckleberry, a rare plant, is found in the area. There are 1,454 acres of possible old-growth upland hardwoods and pine, including a stand of oak more than 200 years old. Most of the area is managed for bear.

The Forest Service identified this Long Spur roadless area.
