Johns Creek Mountain

The Johns Creek Mountain area encompasses an almost 12-mile section along the north side of Johns Creek Mountain in an area where the sweeping, wavelike appearance of the ridge and valley topography is most impressive. The mountain begins at 2,895-foot Aps Knob, overlooking the town of New Castle, and continues at an even 2,900- to 3,000-foot level throughout its length. Below the mountain are numerous hollows and ridges.

This scenic area contains approximately 1,274 acres of possible old growth. Small tracts of white oak, northern red oak, chestnut oak, basswood, and hickory with old-growth characteristics are found at several locations near the ridge top. Part of the area is managed for bear. Some of the area around Tub Run is managed for ruffed grouse.

Hikers and hunters can access the top of the mountain by the Caidwell Trail, the Tub Run Trail, or a ridgeline trail off of the top of Thb Run Trail.

Approximate Size: 6,323 acres
Location: Craig County, southeast of New Castle, New Castle Ranger District
Topos: Looney, Potts Creek, Craig Springs
