Hunting Camp - Little Wolf Creek

All 500 acres of the Little Wolf Creek Special Management Area is located in this tract. Little Wolf Creek, a cascading stream through a gorge-like valley, is a highlight of the Appalachian Trail. Beavers have created numerous ponds and marshes along the creek, providing diverse habitats and opportunities to view beaver, muskrat, turkey, reptiles, and amphibians. Fraser's sedge, listed in Virginia as rare, is present in the Little Wolf Creek area. The creek is listed in the Virginia Wildlife Viewing Guide.

The area includes more than 7 miles of the Appalachian Trail. It also includes the High Water Trail along the slopes of Brushy Mountain, which makes a nice loop with the AT. There are good views of Burkes Garden from the AT and Davis Farm Campsite on Garden Mountain. Hunting Camp and Laurel creeks are both native trout streams.

The Forest Service characterizes 98 percent of the area as retaining unspoiled scenic beauty. The area contains 642 acres of possible old growth. More than two-thirds of the area provides opportunities for secluded back-country recreation. The area is also prime black bear habitat.

The Forest Service identified a Hunting Camp-Little Wolf Creek roadless area. In this proposal, the Appalachian Trail corridor borders the roadless area along the crest of Garden Mountain.
