Feathercamp

Feathercamp is one of the largest
interior spaces in the Mount Rogers NRA, and is a more secluded setting
for primitive recreation than the High Country. The hardwood, hemlock,
and pine forests provide habitat for black bear.
The Feathercamp area contains a number of rich coves, and provides habitat
for
salamanders. Rush Creek, a trout stream, runs through a 77-acre tract of
towering old-growth hemlocks. A small portion of Feathercamp is designated as
a
special management area.
This scenic area includes the Appalachian Trail, the Iron Mountain and Feathercamp
Branch trails, and other small trails. The Iron Mountain Trail ascends to the
Cuckoo, a peak overlooking the town of Damascus.
Except for the AT and lron Mountain Trail, Feathercamp receives relatively light
use. The area is becoming popular with mountain bikers, and there are some planned
timber sales. It contains more than 3,500 acres of lands with semi-primitive
recreation opportunities, and 796 acres of possible old growth.
This area meets the Forest Service standards for low road density and naturalness;
conservationists maintain the area should be identified as
roadless.
