At
about 75,000 acres, this northernmost ranger district in the Blue Ridge
Mountains features
beautiful scenery, popular recreation attractions, and rich biodiversity.
It is crossed by about 53 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The
Blue Ridge Parkway
reaches its highest point in Virginia at almost 4,000 feet
near Apple
Orchard
Mountain, and stretches for 40 miles across the district. Also
notable are wildflower displays, cold-water trout streams,
and horse trails. The district is near Roanoke and 1-81. Less than
12,000
acres of the district is preserved as wilderness — James
River Face and the adjacent Thunder Ridge.
Across the James River to the north is the 150,000-acre Pedlar Ranger
District of the George Washington National Forest. Beginning with the
Three Sisters area
across the river from the James River Face Wilderness, a string of
roadless areas extends through this district.
