June Events for the New River Group of the Sierra
Wednesday, June 18
3rd Wednesdays at 5. Meet at 5pm at More Than Coffee, a Lebanese restaurant near the corner of North Main and College at 235 North Main in downtown Blacksburg. We will take care of any immediate Sierra Club business, catch up on environmental news, and enjoy the good company. A regular event for the New River Group.
Saturday, June 21
Cookout at Wind Rock at 4:00. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be supplied. Please bring a side dish or dessert and your own drink. We'll share with any hikers coming thru on the AT. People may want to bring a blanket or camp chair. Wind Rock has beautiful views and a large drop-off, so children need to be carefully supervised. For carpooling, meet at the University Mall Kroger at 3:20
Directions: Take 460 West from Blacksburg to Route 700 on the right. There is a Mountain Lake sign before the turn.
Proceed to the top of the mountain, passing the hotel on your right. The road soon turns dirt.
Continue with lake on your right about 1.5 miles to fork.
Bear LEFT at the fork. Proceed about 3.7 miles to large dirt parking lot on left and signage on right. Park in lot, cross road in front of sign and climb hill to overlook and fire ring.
Saturday, June 28
Tour de Cut, a hike in the Marshall Run Area of the National Forest in Rockingham County with a camping option, sponsored by the Virginia Chapter of Sierra Club and Virginia Forest Watch. The trip is an educational, yet fun, event for people of all walks of life who have not seen the negative impacts of logging, road building, mineral development, off-highway vehicle routes or other development on public lands. Meet and depart at 10AM at the parking lot of the Shenandoah Valley Tourist Information Center, off Interstate 81, Exit 264. We plan to be back at the original meeting location by 4PM.
