POLITICAL
We work to elect environmentally sound government representatives and maintain ongoing dialogs with politicians. One way to do this is by making Sierra Club candidate endorsements. We also participate in election campaigns at volunteer nights. Your help is needed to:

Meet with local and state political leaders
Participate in the Sierra Club endorsement process, whereby the Club endorses candidates with strong environmental records
Work on an endorsed political campaign
Participate in Lobby Day during the Virginia General Assembly legislative session (held on the MLK Jr. holiday in Richmond)

ACTIVISM
Each year the Mount Vernon Group engages its members, local civic groups, local elected officials and other community partners in some very focused, specific environmental campaigns. These campaigns usually involve staging public events (rallies, panel discussions, etc.), tabling at existing community events (e.g., Alexandria's Earth Day celebration, the Arlington County Fair), meeting with local elected officials, writing letters to the editors of local papers, and more. Your participation can be big or small, depending on your available time and interest! Please let us know if you are interested in any of the following priority topics for this year:

Clean Energy
Transportation
Smart Growth
Air and Water Quality

COMMUNICATIONS
We prepare and distribute the Mount Vernon Sierran newsletter, which is sent out 4 times per year to our local members. We also maintain an email listserv, a Group web site, and are actively exploring the ways that we can engage our members via social networking. Volunteers are needed to help:

Contribute newsletter articles
Assist the newsletter editor with editing articles
Develop and implement social networking strategies for the Group
Phone bank to help promote Group events and issue campaigns
Develop promotional and educational print collateral

EXCOM
The Executive Committee, or ExCom, is the leadership of the Mount Vernon Group. Elected by the group membership, the ExCom makes official group policy and coordinates all programs and activities. The MVG ExCom meets about 5 times per year, including at our annual planning meeting in January. ExCom meetings are open to all members, and are a good way to learn about and guide the environmental priorities and daily activities of the group. Would you be interested in:

Helping us establish environmental priorities by running for office to serve on the ExCom
Serving as a special issues chairperson, focusing on a very specific topic like water quality, municipal recycling, or open space preservation (note: you do not need to be an expert in this area to serve as an issues chair)

SOCIAL/RECREATIONAL
The Group enjoys social events like happy hours, picnics, and dinner gatherings at restaurants featuring locally-grown foods. The Group also promotes Potomac Region Outings, a section of the Sierra Club in the Metropolitan Washington D.C. area that sponsors events like hikes and canoe trips. You can find out more about SCPRO at http://www.sierrapotomac.org. We're looking for people who would be interested in:

Helping to organize Group social events (e.g., picnics, happy hours, restaurant meet-ups)
Helping with the outings sponsored by SCPRO
