Welcome! We're the largest local Sierra Club group in Virginia, with more than 4400 members in the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church, Arlington County, and parts of Fairfax and Prince William counties.

The Mount Vernon Group of the Sierra Club conducts a number of activities and programs. This list describes what we do. Please check off any activities that are of interest to you. Don't worry about lack of experience; the Sierra Club is grassroots -- we all work together as volunteers.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY-The Mount Vernon Group is active on a number of different local and national fronts. We have special working groups set up to learn about and act upon issues like air quality, global warming, sustainable food consumption, local transportation needs, and more. Additionally, we do workshops for interested teachers and student groups in local K-12 schools. If you are interested in one of these areas, or in starting a working group on another topic, we need you! Your help is greatly appreciated in the following areas:

POLITICAL-We work to elect environmentally sound government representatives and maintain ongoing dialogs with politicians. One way to do this is by making Sierra Club candidate endorsements. We also participate in election campaigns at volunteer nights. Your help is needed to:

Meet with local and state political leaders
Participate in the Sierra Club endorsement process, whereby the Club endorses candidates with strong environmental records
Work on an endorsed political campaign
Participate in Lobby Day during the Virginia General Assembly legislative session (held on the MLK Jr. holiday in Richmond)

NEWSLETTER-We prepare and distribute the Mount Vernon Sierran, which is sent out 4 times per year to our approximately 5,000 members. The editor organizes and lays out the newsletter, with some assistance from the editorial board. Volunteers are needed to help:

Contribute articles
Solicit newsletter sponsors and advertisers
Assist the newsletter editor with editing articles or layout

EVENTS and FUNDRAISING-The group sponsors a various social events, including periodic "Sierra Club and Beer" happy hours, and our Annual Holiday Party and Silent Auction, where we raise funds to support our local activities. Would you be interested in:

Planning or working at the Silent Auction, Sierra Club & Beer, or other events
Donating items to or soliciting items for the Silent Auction

EXCOM-The Executive Committee, or ExCom, is the leadership of the Mount Vernon Group. Elected by the group membership, the ExCom makes official group policy and coordinates all programs and activities. The MVG ExCom meets about 5 times per year, including at our annual planning meeting in January. ExCom meetings are open to all members, and are a good way to learn about and guide the environmental priorities and daily activities of the group. Would you be interested in:

Helping us establish environmental priorities by running for office to serve on the ExCom
Serving as a special issues chairperson, focusing on forest protection, water quality, or some very focused topic

TECHNICAL-We maintain the Group's Web site and provide computer help with the group database information. Volunteers are needed to:

Help improve the group's Web site
Provide computer or database expertise
