The Mount Vernon Sierran

Welcome! We're the largest local Sierra Club group in Virginia, with more than 4400 members in the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church, Arlington County, and parts of Fairfax and Prince William counties.

Take the Local Food Challenge!

Here's How It Works: Commit to spending 25% of your food budget on locally-grown sources between May and November 2007. So, if you spend $100/week on food, then $25 would be spent on locally-grown foods. Local sources include farmers’ markets, CSA's (community supported agriculture operations), roadside stands, pick-your-own operations, or supermarkets where they indicate a food’s origin. Check the resources page to find out how to locate local farmers' markets, CSA's, and more.

Why go local when you are shopping for food? There are many reasons why it is a flavorful and environmentally sound solution! You can learn more by attending one of our local food/True Cost of Food local events or reading about the issue.

If you commit to the local food challenge, you'll be eligible for a monthly drawing for a $50 gift certificate to My Organic Market, with locations in Alexandria, Rockville, College Park, Frederick, and Columbia.
