Mary Kadera, Mount Vernon Group Chair On behalf of the Mount Vernon Group, welcome to our web site. We hope you'll find the information here useful, but more than that, we hope it will inspire you to get involved with the Group's local environmental work and have fun with us in our social activities. There are many reasons to get involved in our local environmental work; for me, it's been my memories of terrific family outings in the Shenandoah Valley and West Virginia when I was growing up, and my hope that my son will get to spend time in beautiful places and enjoy the natural world.

We're a large group with more than 4400 members, but to get things done, we really depend on the time and talents of a much smaller group of active, dedicated volunteers. Our leadership team, the Executive Committee (ExCom), is comprised of local, volunteer members, and we're grateful for the hard work of dozens of member-volunteers who are helping us improve the quality of life in the Northern Virginia area through political activism, public education programs, and more.

Our issues are described more fully on another page of this site, and we are always looking for more hands to help us. If you're concerned about air quality, global warming, transportation issues or other concerns, I encourage you to get in touch with me or another member of the ExCom so we can use your energy and good ideas!

Sierra Club is not just about saving the environment, but enjoying the environment, which to my way of thinking includes environmental fellowship. Our Group enjoys regular dining-out evenings together, an annual holiday party, "Sierra Club and Beer" happy hours at local bars, silent auctions, trips to nearby farms, and more. We hope to see you at one of these social events this year!
