Northern Virginia is afflicted with the same out-of-control land development patterns that infect many metropolitan areas, with trees and open space being leveled for townhouses, traffic congestion worsening, some suburban areas deteriorating, and environmental quality declining. Meanwhile, our political leaders either ignore the problem or complain that their hands are tied and there is nothing they can do.
