FOJ Summer Fun - 2009

PDF: FOJ Picnic June, 2009

April 4th & 5th, 2009
Saturday & Sunday
Program: Favorite Places Outings
Speaker: Larry Rousell

Hike a 5-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail from Route 60 to the Lynchburg Reservoir.

This was my third and most pleasant trip to the Lynchburg Reservoir via the Appalachian Trail off route 60. Along for the trek were Eve Burkholy and Greg Moser. The weather was a perfect sunny 70 degrees and the trail was just as I remembered, gorgeous. Dinner was a scrumptious chili, breakfast was sketchy; my companions - delightful!

May 31st, 2009
Sunday 9:30 am
Program: Tour the Rice Center with a researcher!
Speaker: John Wade

The Rice Center, usually not open to the public, is rich in natural and cultural resources. It is located on 342 acres along the historic James River, midway between Richmond and Williamsburg. The center has a variety of aquatic and terrestrial habitats that provide many research and educational opportunities.

A primary focus of research at the site is on the science and policy of large rivers and their fringing riparian and wetland landscapes, with the broad and scenic James River as the focal point of that research. The site’s history includes extensive use during the Colonial and Civil War periods and dates back to Native American use some 8,000 years ago.

We will meet at 9:30am on Sunday, May 31st in the parking lot Harrison St and Shafer St on Broad St, to carpool promptly at 10:00am to the center. We should arrive by 10:30am. After a couple hour tour with a researcher, we will have lunch on a bluff overlooking the river. Please bring a bag lunch and anything you might need to drink.

A special trip for Sierra Club members, there are limited spaces available.
