UPDATE:
The City of Richmond, with most of region’s environmental groups, are celebrating Earth Day 2009, in conjunction with the James River Fish Festival, on Saturday, April 18th, 2009.
The festival will be located in the Old Manchester Area, adjacent to the Mayo Bridge and floodwall at the south end of Mayo Bridge, in a 6 block area from the James River & floodwall to Art Works (the 300 block of Hull Street), from 10am - 4 pm. An opening ceremony will begin at 11:30 am, on the City Showmobile stage, at in the intersection of Decatur and Second, just west of Carravatti’s.
The Earth Day theme this year is More Fun, Less Carbon. It includes the James River Fish Festival (with Ralph White and James River Park System), music and food, tree give-aways, biking and walking events; an exhibition area with environmental groups and non-profits, green vendor areas, art and children’s activities. All the major regional environmental groups will be participating: the Sierra Club, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Alliance, Dominion Power Bon Secours Richmond Health System, Tricycle Gardens, and the Richmond Local Food network, Cityspace Solar, the state departments of Conservation and Recreation and Environmental Quality, and Forestry, Art Works, the James River Association, James River Outdoor Coalition, several City Departments, Ralph White (James River Park System manager) with the Friends of James River Park, the Clean City Commission, the Cool Cities Commission, Better Housing Coalition , James River Green Building Council, Richmond Audubon Society, Rockitz, and the Richmond Recreation and Parks Foundation and many vendors and entertainers.

CELEBRATE TREES!
Carillon in Byrd Park Saturday, April 4, 2009, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM.
Please join us to Celebrate Trees! from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at the Carillon in Richmond's Byrd Park. Admission and parking are free.
“Everyone in the family will have fun at our Arbor Day celebration,” said Suzette Lyon, chairwoman of the Richmond Tree Steward Advisory Panel. “If you want to learn more about trees and how they make our lives better, we'll give you numerous opportunities to do that, too.”
Celebrate Trees! will feature tree climbing, educational workshops for adults, fun learning activities for kids, an acoustic band, a variety of exhibitors and vendors, and a concert on the Carillon bells. The Virginia Department of Forestry will offer free bare-root trees.
Dr. Jeff Kirwan, a co-author of the popular book Remarkable Trees of Virginia, will be the keynote speaker.
The sponsors are Richmond Tree Stewards, Richmond’s Urban Forestry division of Public Works, and Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. Other sponsors include Dominion, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond Tree Stewards are trained citizen volunteers who help the arborists of Urban Forestry care for trees along city streets.
