RECYCLING BREAKTHROUGH! 2013–2014
A Contest for Students in Elementary and Secondary Schools
To foster greater recycling participation throughout the Richmond metropolitan area and neighboring counties by creating practical new programs to promote recycling.
Prizes: First Prize-$1,000 Second Prize-$500
Eligibility: The contest is open to all students in grades K through 12 in the Falls of the James Group's service area, whether they attend public or private schools or are being home-schooled. Proposals may be submitted by a class, a project group, or an individual. Winners of the 2012–13 Recycling Breakthrough! Contest are eligible to participate with a project developed between August 2013 and March 1, 2014.
Criteria: Selection criteria include the following:
- Project concept and scale
- Steps for implementation and replication of the process
- Ease of implementation
- Cost effectiveness
- Analysis of environmental impact(s)
- Documented effectiveness (spectacular failures will be considered, too)
In addition, a public presentation in the medium of the contestant's choice is required as a means of explaining and sharing your project and its results.

Finalists notified March 31, 2014. Winners announced, prizes awarded, winning presentations showcased in April during a public Earth Day event.
