KIPTOPEKE STATE PARK
Tagging MONARCH BUTTERFLIES
October, 2000
| Did you ever see an expert tag a Monarch Butterfly? We did!! Mark Garland from the Washington D.C. area Audubon Naturalist Society caught and tagged one Monarch for our education. He also went into details of the Eastern Shore migration of these creatures for the last three years, how the work has increased and the status of this years migration, which is one of the poorest on record. |

Mark told us they had captured one Monarch tagged at Cape May N.J. that had made the journey in one day and 4 hours, a distance of 146 miles. He also said they had determined this year that the monarchs hang around the Eastern Shore as much as 5 days before venturing across the Bay.

| All who were there greaatly appredciated the work that Mrak is doing, the time he took from his busy schedule and the excellent presentation he gave us. Besides the tagging demonstration we saw the greatest diversity of butterfly species that I've ever seen in one day. In addition, the weather was perfect. |
