Attack on America

Circumstances could not have changed more during the last month. Our lives and those of future generations of Americans will never be the same. Terrorism is now a part of our way of life.

Unless we take some positive actions, we will feel like victims. Before we begin we need to have a clear idea of what the problem is. The problem is a clash of two major cultures, that of the East clashing with that of the West. The East is totally surrounded by the West, and the threat is very real. They will not give up easily. We would not expect them to. We wouldnšt in their position.

I donšt think declaring "war" is going to give us the kind of peace and security that we want. I do however agree with what our government is doing with regard to terrorism. I just donšt think that a war is going to change the minds of many people towards us.

Under the circumstances I suggest two courses of action.

  • The first is to make our own political system work the way it was designed to work. We need to demonstrate that this country is not only wealthy, but ethical and moral.
  • Secondly, I suggest we reduce our dependency on foreign oil.

Our best chance of improving the political process is to get involved in local issues. National issues are too remote and require agents to take action for us. Only they have the first hand knowledge of what is occurring. We need to be knowledgeable of the philosophy behind our government and to know how local institutions function. We can do this if the members are interested.

Several steps can be taken by each of us to reduce dependency on foreign oil. These include:

  1. Taking one trip each week for shopping or similar activity by bicycle or by walking,
  2. Organizing car trips to reduce the number taken,
  3. Cutting down on the use of electricity around the home,
  4. Reducing heat loss of our home,
  5. Not leaving your computer on at all times,
  6. Procuring energy efficient appliances.

We invite your suggestions of other activities to reduce energy use.

October PROGRAM

REESE LUKEI
Raptor Bander

We have invited Mr. Reese Lukei, the local Osprey and other birds of prey expert. Each Fall for the last 15 years Reese has manned a hawk banding station at the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge. He tags in a single season anywhere from 800 to 1100 hawks. Reese normally brings a hawk or two with him if it has been a good morning at the station!

Reesešs availability is not assured. If the hawks are really moving in large numbers he may have to stay at the station late into the afternoon and evening. If he is not available, our program will be about local butterflies and butterfly gardens.

See you Monday October 1st, at 7PM at the Virginia Beach Central Library.
