| For nearly 30 years people in the Second Congressional District have had no voice in Congress for their concerns for the environment. Now, there just might be a candidate who will listen and who will do something about these concerns. Our concerns have not mainly been about wilderness and wildlife. Rather the issues have been about the air we and our children breathe, and about the water we all drink. Of course wilderness and wildlife are important, because we all benefit from Nature. Senator Schrock's record speaks for itself. He is a fiscal conservative when it comes to spending for the peoples concerns like education, roads, and the environment. But he is not conservative when it comes to the special interests of those like developers. Consider his positions on wetlands, education, transportation and sprawl and development. Now we have an unknown candidate: JODY WAGNER. The fact that she is a Democrat doesn't mean much about her stand on environmental and people issues. So what are her positions on our concerns? Will she be open to different points of view, like ours and other groups like us? Will she have the ability to consider all sides, will she have the wisdom to support economic development when appropriate and will she fight for the cause of the public when also appropriate? We have a scheduled meeting with her to find out the answers to these questions They will be recorded here on our web site. Fred Adams |
| This is one of our most enjoyable and satisfying outings. We will take a purposeful walk on he shores about Fisherman's Island and pick up trash. There is frequently some very unusual trash. One year we even came across a TV set. No idea on how it ended up on the beach. In addition to the pleasant hike, we also see some of the late Fall shore birds like oyster catchers and brown pelicans. We even sometimes see deer in the surrounding woods. Since we are going earlier this year, we may see several other migrating songbirds. We are going the first weekend in November, Saturday the 4th. That is the only date the Refuge personnel can assist us in getting to the beach. Time is 8:30 AM; location for carpooling is the parking lot at the sourthern end of the Chesapaake Bay Bridge. The date again is 4 November. Bring a lunch and layered clothing. We will be back by 1 PM. |
| Did you ever see an expert tag a Monarch Butterfly? We did!! Mark Garland from the Washington D.C. area Audubon Naturalist Society caught and tagged one Monarch for our education. He also went into details of the Eastern Shore migration of these creatures for the last three years, how the work has increased and the status of this years migration, which is one of the poorest on record. | |

| Mark told us they had captured one Monarch tagged at Cape May N.J. that had made the journey in one day and 4 hours, a distance of 146 miles. He also said they had determined this year that the monarchs hang around the Eastern Shore as much as 5 days before venturing across the Bay. | |

| All who were there greaatly appredciated the work that Mrak is doing, the timehe took from his busy schedule and the excellent presentation he gave us. Besides the tagging demonstration we saw the greatest diversity of butterfly species that I've ever seen in one day. In addition, the weather was perfect. | |

| Walter Cronkite, at the Norfolk Forum, recently said "money is corrupting our politics and our society." So he is doing something about it; he is the co-chairperson for a group called the Alliance for Better Campaigns. Unfortunately, there are those who are willing to take personal advantage of the good nature of the American people. Our founding fathers established a government that protected all its citizens from tyranny. It is a very small percentage of people who use government for their own benefit with exorbitent profits from public projects. I believe that government exists to insure that all have an opportunity and not to make a few rich at the expense of the many. If the current situation long continues, the rights of the many will disappear due to the lack of use. Whether we like it or not we muct get involved. Our November meeting is therefore committed to Virginia's politics. We will have an outstanding program. Our key presenter will be Glen Besa, the Virginia Chapter's activist. Glen is one of the most dynamic and positive people. He has had extensive experience as a chapter chair in Maryland, as a regional representative for the national organization of Sierra Club and the Virginia Chapter's lobbyist. Glen is filled with fresh ideas, humor, fearless in action, and respected by the opposition. Come and join this lively and constructive session on politics. We will definitely make this meeting worth your while. The date is: Monday, 6 November, 7 PM, Virginia Beach Central Library. |

| This year we have had many people come to our meetings and outings. At these events we have little time to socialize, share concerns and ideas, and get to know each other. Our Christmas Party is a great event and time to spend with others with similar values. This year we are doing it on a Sunday afternoon from 5-7 PM at the charming residence of Docter Ted and Barbara Dupuy. They live in West Chesapeake. The date is Sunday the 3rd of December. Get the holidays off to a great start. We provide the drinks and you bring your favorite dish to share. Salads, main courses, deserts are all welcomed! We have had marvelous food through the years.
