MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

CONTINUATION IN THE FALL

There will be no general membership meetings in July and August. We may be working on some of service outings and will be following up on the monarch, turtle, and woodpecker programs.

In the Fall we will be adding new efforts on the following: eagles, other birds of prey, and Chesapeake Bay blue crabs and oysters. We invite you to be involved in at least one of these projects.

JUNE PROGRAM

RED COCKADED WOODPECKER

We are continuing our help species and improve habitat programs. The Red Cockaded Woodpecker is the next species.

At one time it was estimated that Virginia had upwards of 3,000 nesting pairs. Now we have "6" nesting pairs and they are all on The Nature Conservancy's land near Ivor.

We are most fortunate to have as one of the speakers the TNC local office manager Brian VanEerden. Brian is one of those gifted persons who loves what he does and is very good at it.

In addition, we have also invited the manager of the Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge to be with us. We will invite him to discuss the storm damage from Isabel and the potential for introducing Red Cockaded Woodpeckers on the refuge.

THERE IS A "NEW" LOCATION FOR THE JUNE MEETING. IT WILL BE AT THE CHESAPEAKE MAIN LIBRARY OFF OF CEDAR ROAD. The date is the 7th of June and the time is 7 PM.

We will also have an update on our other on-going programs. I saw my first monarch on the 4th of May. My milkweed, planted last year, is over two feet tall and my cage is ready.

TRAILS ALLIANCE

We are working to create a lose alliance of outdoor groups interested in pedestrian trails in our region. We think that communities would greatly benefit if there were more hiking, jogging and bicycling trails. This should also include trails for the horse community.

There are some very interesting projects to work on these include:

The Norfolk Southern Railways right-on-way from Norfolk to Virginia Beach, The recreation and picnic parks along the Dismal Swamp Canal after the new Route 17 is constructed, A "Greenway" from Stumpy Lake to the area of the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

We would very much like to know if you would like to add some others to the list. Give Fred at call at 467-2775.

CONSERVATION

Ellis James

Our conservation leader and guide Ellis James has been working on the Navy seal training program at Fort Story. He has made contact with the base commander and has uncovered some encouraging information. Where possible we are giving the services credit for the good job they are doing. The base commander has expressed an interest in speaking to our group directly. That is very encouraging! We will invite him to our September meeting.

Ellis' next area of concern is the condition of our national parks.

DISMAL SWAMP REFUGE

Disappointment

We had planned and hoped to assist the personnel at the Great Dismal Swamp Refuge with storm damage this Spring. Unfortunately, the service did not get the funds necessary to cut the woods in order for us to assist with its removal. It was a great idea whose time has not as yet come.

We will continue to work with the manager at the refuge to uncover an interesting project for us.
